In Focus: Rankings

What Roles Should Rankings Play in Selecting a University?

There are numerous rankings which analyze various aspects of universities. So before drawing on the results of rankings to decide on a university you should ask yourself: what was analyzed? What is the underlying data or who was consulted? And most importantly: are the results relevant to my study decision?

For example, if you are aiming for a research oriented degree, those rankings focusing on the research performance of universities are important. If applied studies and semesters abroad are important to you, then rankings highlighting employability or internationality are relevant to you.

When used like this, rankings can be an orientation guide. Under no circumstances should rankings replace your personal impression of a university.
