Arrival Information
Arriving at Munich Airport
Munich Airport (MUC) is located about 20 kilometers from Munich city center. The fastest and least expensive way to get to the city is via public transportation (S-Bahn). Therefore, after you arrive, look for the green S-Bahn ("Schnellbahn" = fast train) sign which leads you to the S-Bahn station. At the station you will find maps on how to find your way to your location. Two lines - S1 and S8 - run from the airport to downtown Munich.
Purchasing a Ticket
You have to purchase the ticket before entering the S-Bahn from one of the ticket counters at the S-Bahn station. Choose a ticket that says ‘Gesamtnetz’ which currently (as of January 2010) costs €10.40 and is valid for the entire day. Alternatively, you may purchase a 3 day City Tour Card which covers you for your first 3 days in Munich.
You can pay via credit card or in cash (Euros only). After you receive the ticket, you have to get it stamped or validated for that day, which is done via a blue time-stamping machine near the station entrance (if you travel with an unstamped ticket or card, you'll be subject to a hefty fine).
