I’m Wiebke Lehnert, Marketing & Communications Manager at Munich Business School, and today I’m sitting down again with MBS students Lucas, Heiner and Max. In the last episode, the trio shed light on the field of elite sport and gave us an insight into the world of professional athletes. They shared a selection of their wide-ranging experiences with us and I’d like to touch on that again in this episode before moving on to discussing studying and professional careers. Max, could you tell us something specific that professional sport has taught you? Are there any experiences you look back on now and apply to your journey after sport?

Max Maas: Sure. I think that, when you decide to become a professional athlete, you grow up very quickly. I was 14 when I said to my parents: “Mom, Dad, I want to go to the ski boarding school, I want to leave home, I want to live my dream.” That certainly isn’t easy for parents to deal with and, from that point on, you’re on your own to a degree. Of course, I was always able to rely on my parents being there for me at any time, day or night – and I still can. If I ever have questions, they’re there for me. But you’re living away from home, at a boarding school; you’re living your dream, but you grow up and become independent very quickly. A lot of people might not see that as a good thing, but I think it’s a good thing if, at the age of just 14, you’re already very independent and grow up quickly in pursuit of your goals. That’s definitely something very positive for me. You learn to handle things well and develop self-management and time-management because you have different highlights over the course of a year and you need to be perfectly prepared at all times. For my part, I know that if I have an exam or a paper to submit, I’m the type of person who will be prepared well in advance. Professional sport, all the traveling it involves and the various climaxes it entails mean that I’ve learned to organize myself and my time very well, so I’m extremely well prepared when the time comes. I’ve talked about this with my classmates at MBS, too. I submitted a paper really, really early and they were asking: “Hey, how did you manage that?” But then, thanks to professional sport, I can say that I don’t need any pressure to prepare myself for something. I’d rather finish something two weeks early and then take another look at it again just before the deadline but, as a professional athlete, I didn’t have time do something for uni right up to the deadline. It just wasn’t an option. I had to plan clearly and precisely when I would have time – and then make good use of it. And it’s true that you can learn effectively without pressure, but from professional sport I also know that I work well under pressure. In fact, this pressure can even be really fun, and that’s also something that I learned from professional sport. You get to know yourself very well; you know what’s on the line and you can use all these individual building blocks. I’m also aware that we’re at a different point in time now – it’s great that we were successful, very successful in what we did out there on the pistes, but this isn’t that time anymore. On paper, the fact that I can ski quickly doesn’t do anything to help me or my ambitions to make progress in a given management field. However, I can pick out various points from my career that taught me something: “Max, you know how you work best, so use it.” And so, on that basis, I can prepare myself as effectively as possible for the second stage, the stage that’s coming up next, and give my best in order to meet my goals.

Wiebke Lehnert: Okay, and what about you two, do you have anything to add?

Heiner Längst: I think Max put it very well. Professional sport teaches resilience, often through very hard lessons. But I think it’s also important to point out that you still have to make the most of it. You have to reflect on things. You have to look reflectively at your experiences during your time as an active athlete and consider how they can actually help you in your life in a company. If you don’t go about things reflectively, then I think you’d find it difficult to extract the benefits. And, as Max has already said, there are so, so many advantages that an elite sportsperson can bring to bear in a company. Resilience, working under pressure, setting targets, these are the ABCs of mental training – and that’s second nature to us. In my opinion, that can represent real added value. But, as I said, as an athlete you need to be conscious of those things. And just because a person was an elite sportsperson doesn’t mean that they’ll make this transfer. The challenge is to translate the benefits of sport into your professional career after sport. And so that’s where you need to look at things reflectively – and I’d say that, by doing so, you can make a lot more from the symbiosis of sport and business.

Lucas Kröger: I agree with Heiner completely. You can take a lot from sport, professional sport, elite sport – an awful lot – but just because you’ve been there and done it doesn’t mean that you’ll automatically extract maximum benefit. Instead, you have to work through it and reflect on your experiences, as you so eloquently put it. I’ve been packing what you said there into a sort of image. I think that this target image and setting targets, whether short, medium or long-term targets, and then working to achieve them – it provides a guideline. It allows you to work towards a certain objective or specific career goals, which you can then put into the context of working in a company. And there are a lot of factors that come into play. As Max has already said, that includes organization, coordinating all your deadlines and submission dates, and then having the discipline to actually make it all happen. Something that I’ve learned to do is to go beyond your target. I think that, in the world of elite sport, you learn to train beyond a target, to exceed a target. And I think that’s another very unique thing that separates an elite athlete from an amateur. Personally, with my background in a team sport, I’ve also been able to learn a lot about teamwork, trusting in your colleagues, trusting in the team. We’ve got a nice saying in handball: ‘A defense is only as strong as its weakest link’. That’s universally applicable, in a way. It means that you have to find a way to strengthen your weakest point because otherwise it becomes the opponent’s main point of attack. That’s what I think, anyway.

Heiner Längst: I think that’s another good point that I’d just like to pick up on – and I think I need to go to bat for ski sports a little. You could certainly accuse us of being egocentric solo athletes that only look out for ourselves. But – and I’m speaking for myself but also for Max as my former teammate – in skiing, when the day comes and you’re on your own, when you just have to get down the course as fast you can, the only way you can succeed is when you’ve completed your preparation as part of a functioning team in which you support one another, motivate one another and, in doing so, always drive each other on to perform that little bit better. That’s what makes a successful winter. And it also produces successful solo athletes. I think it’s a good point that sport in general can teach you to adopt a team-focused mindset – but also how to get your elbows out when necessary.

Lucas Kröger: Exactly. Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply anything about solo athletes! (laughs)

Heiner Längst: No, don’t worry, you didn’t.

Max Maas: No, not at all.

Heiner Längst: I just thought it was a good opportunity to score a point! (laughs)

Max Maas: I would even go so far as to say that, when you’re traveling around together for 200 days per year, you grow together and become a family where you’re really there for each other if someone’s not doing so well. You become an unbelievably strong team and really help to lift each other up. You have to be intelligent in how you approach things. For some people, things can start to go backwards when you’re traveling around with the team – but, for my part, I have to say that my teammates remain my closest friends and, once you know how, you can really lift each other up. If one of my teammates wins, I’ll know that I’ve beaten him in training at some point, so I can reach that level. The best example of this is the Norwegians. They’re such a unit. They drive each other on so much that, the second someone gets injured and drops out, they can call on a youngster and bring him into their circle, include him in this sort of Viking family – and, even in a solo sport, they become so unbelievably integrated into the team. And that’s essential, because otherwise you’ll grow lonely when you’re on the road for over 200 days per year.

Lucas Kröger: Absolutely. It’s the same for the Norwegian handballers. I just wanted to add that it’s not long since I went back to my old club to commentate on a game. While I was there, I realized that I also have great connections with the team around the team. I mean, for example, the physio, who is immensely important for us – as is probably also the case in ski sports – just like the coach and everyone else involved. Spectators often completely lose sight of the fact that this team around the team plays a much larger role than you might realize.

Wiebke Lehnert: That’s certainly a lot of different experiences, and they’ll help you – especially being connected to others and the ability to work in a team. I think that they’re skills that can definitely stand you in good stead, especially in a world where we’re moving increasingly close together and becoming more fine-meshed and interconnected. And, despite everything else and your love of sport – which is something you all share and will never lose – it’s also evident that professional sport and elite sport isn’t the be-all and end-all for you. You need to have another string to your bow ready for the end of your sporting career, when it inevitably arrives. I’d be interested to hear how you feel MBS can help you in that regard and what tips you would offer to sportspeople and athletes who are also thinking about their life after professional sport. Max, what advice would you give?

Max Maas: Well, I think I can speak for Heiner and myself. Ski sports – and in particular the disciplines we specialized in, downhill and Super G – are extremely dangerous. So, you soon realize just how quick a career in this sport can be over, you have to see that. If you fall or get injured, your career can be over in an instant. Both Heiner and I have had the experience of how quickly it can all be over and, as a professional sportsperson, you’re at a point where all your foundations are taken from beneath you. You’re injured, sitting at home unable to do anything, and when you wake up in the morning you’re just waiting for another day to pass because you’re unable to pursue your passion. It was a very significant experience for me. Being able to experience something like that meant that I said to myself: “Hey, you need to find something else besides skiing. You can see just how fast it can all be over.” To my mind, academic education is important in this respect because, as you’ve rightly said, eventually every professional sports career comes to an end with age. So, I set myself the goal of finding a vocation for myself outside of skiing, something I wanted to pursue and to which I could commit myself completely. And, for me, there were just logical steps of how to do this: I finished my bachelor’s degree as quickly as possible while I was still a professional athlete. Then, looking at the portfolio of courses on offer, I wanted to find the very best one for me and then follow that path to find my next calling, something that would allow me to realize my potential, in which I could work to surpass myself. When I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree alongside professional sport, there were only a handful of universities where that was actually possible. For my master’s, I then had what you might call the “luxury version”, in that I had the ability to decide where I wanted to go. I opted for MBS so that I could incorporate sports and, yeah, it was certainly a very different situation. My sporting career was over but I just wanted to keep going. So I guess I realized at a very early stage, even when I was still active as a pro athlete: “Hey, this professional stuff after sports, you need to give 100% to that as well if you want to achieve anything in the field.” And so, as far as I’m concerned, I know that I want to find my next vocation, the right field for me, and I’d say I’ve equipped myself as well as I can to do just that.

Lucas Kröger: Good point. I think that the support, teaching and help that MBS can provide after a sports career is very much present in Max’s course, Sports Business and Communications. MBS has an enormous network. I know a few handballers who have also gone down the sports management route simply because they wanted to keep sport at the heart of their lives. Things are a little different for me, but there’s a lot I can take from the International Business program at MBS. The teaching staff provide a lot of different ideas and motivation. The same goes for the course curriculums and the MBS network, of course. What I found so extraordinary was the internationality of MBS. Of course, MBS is always near the top of the rankings when it comes to internationality. That was a decisive factor for me because, in my head, it was like a golden thread that I wanted and still want to follow above all else. But it all depends on individuals and personalities. Everyone has their own interests and different ideas about what life will look like after a sports career. The offering from MBS is pretty good.

Wiebke Lehnert: Okay. So, to finish off, I’d like to ask you to briefly look to the future. My question is: Where do you see yourselves in 10 years and what role will sport play in your life at that point? Will it be part of your professional life or more of a private thing? What do you think, Heiner?

Heiner Längst: Where do I see myself in 10 years? That’s a really good question. It’s a question I’ve been asked a lot in the past as well – but it was always in the context of where I saw my future in sporting terms. Now, of course, sport is no longer a big part of my life in that respect. Despite that, I still love sport and keeping myself fit and healthy. Nevertheless, I’d still give exactly the same answer as I did back then. It’s true that, by growing up in my family home, I was given a lot of opportunities to do sport. So, my goal – as I move into a professional career after sport – is to enable my children and my family to enjoy at least the same opportunities as I did in my childhood. That means doing any sport they want, trying things out, and having a certain degree of independence and freedom. That’s my goal; it’s the reason behind everything I do. And that’s also my answer to the question of where I see myself in 10 years. I see myself being able to put a big tick beside that goal.

Max Maas: Well, as the second skier here, I’ll go next. Whenever anyone asks me what I miss most about being a professional skier, I always say: “I miss the racing.”. You’re doing something you’re actually a bit scared of, but still… Take, for example, standing in the start house in Kitzbühel. Everyone’s scared but, as soon as the gate opens in front of you, the timing starts, you still chase the clock like there’s no tomorrow. That’s something I miss. But I think that this pressure, this need to deliver, that’s something I can find to some extent in the working world, in business. And, to answer your question about where I see myself in 10 years, I’m looking forward to putting myself in high-pressure situations and facing up to major challenges in the next few years and being forced to handle them. I need situations that challenge me and help me to advance. Situations I can build on. That allow me to show what I can do. I would certainly like to stay connected to sport and, as I’ve already said, continue to include it in my professional life but perhaps moving more towards business – by combining sport, finance and business more closely. I think that, in the next 10 years, I’ll definitely face challenges that will give me that kick again and will allow to feel a certain amount of fear and pressure – just like in the start house in Kitzbühel. I’m looking forward to that. And, of course, as Heiner said, there’s nothing better than sport. You can do it alone, you can do it with your family, your can do it with friends… And, as Heiner also said, I just want to give my children the chance to do the same and try out any sport they want, because I know first-hand how much sport can give you and how great it is. That’s something I want to give back to society – whether it’s my children or my friends. Just saying: “Hey, let’s do X, Y and Z together, give it a go.” There are plenty of downs, of course – but looking back on my career, the negatives are definitely outweighed by the positives I enjoyed in sport. Thankfully, I’ll be able to take that positivity with me into the next chapter in my life.

Lucas Kröger: Well, for me – and I know I’ve said it a few times already – my aspirations still lie in pursuing an international career and moving forward with that, so I’d like to think I would still be doing so in 10 years. That’s my big goal, really. When it comes to sport, I’m lucky that in my position, goalkeeper, you can still play when you’re 40 and even reach your golden years around then. That means that I’ve still got my best years ahead of me, in a way! (laughs) So I’ll definitely still be aiming high and involved in sport. It’s a big part of my life and it always will be. And the framework created for me by older teammates when I was younger – that’s something I can pass on to the younger ones when I’m older. There’s always a sort of generational exchange within the club, with each generation surpassing the one before it and opening up new opportunities for the generations that follow.

Wiebke Lehnert: They all sound like wonderful goals and I’d like to wish you every success in achieving them! Well, all that’s left for me to say is thank you for your fascinating insights into the world of sport and sharing things I’m sure many of us perhaps didn’t know. It’s been so much fun talking with you. I hope that our listeners out there have enjoyed it just as much. So, that’s goodbye from me – until next time!

Lucas Kröger: Yes, thank you, too!

Max Maas: Thank you.

Lucas Kröger: Ciao, ciao!

Heiner: Thank you, ciao!

Missed the first episode?
