Moving from India to Germany, building an international career, and finding your place in a new professional environment takes more than a degree. In this India Special of Future Forward, MBS alumnus Sachin Bansal shares insights from his own journey \u2013 from studying Mechanical Engineering in India and Mechatronics in Germany to earning an MBA in General Management at Munich Business School and building a career in Quality Management at BMW AG.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

But Sachin\u2019s MBS journey did not end with graduation. True to his belief in giving back, he has stayed actively connected to the MBS community and has supported students as a mentor in the MBS Alumni Mentoring Program for several years. In this interview, he reflects on his experiences at MBS, the value of cultural adaptation and professional networks, and why sharing his experience with the next generation has become such a meaningful part of his alumni journey.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current position<\/strong>:<\/strong> Sachin Bansal is a Quality Management System Expert and Lead System Auditor at BMW AG in Munich, with more than 20 years of international experience in quality management systems, auditing and process improvement across BMW production plants worldwide. His work combines quality management, auditing, and Lean principles to drive process improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey from India to Germany<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What were the biggest challenges when settling in Germany, both academically and personally, and how did you overcome them?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

It was an exciting but significant transition. Moving from India to Germany meant adapting to a different academic system, culture and way of working while building a professional identity.
Language and cultural understanding were important, as effective communication involves understanding how people think, make decisions, give feedback and build relationships. Understanding the German job market and professional expectations was another challenge.
I addressed these challenges through continuous learning, practical experience, building relationships and remaining open to feedback. Over time, I learned to see cultural differences as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What helped you most at MBS to adapt, build your network, and succeed?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of MBS\u2019s greatest strengths for me was its international and practical orientation.
MBS brought together people from different backgrounds, strengthening my communication, teamwork and ability to understand different perspectives. The connection between business education and real-world challenges was especially valuable.
The network I built at MBS has also remained meaningful beyond graduation, both professionally and personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What differences have you noticed between studying or working in India and Germany?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Both environments have strengths, and I would not describe one as simply better than the other. In India, I experienced energy, adaptability and initiative; in Germany, structure, process discipline, planning and systematic execution.
International work taught me to combine adaptability and initiative with structured processes, quality and long-term thinking. This is especially relevant in automotive manufacturing, where global teams need both discipline and adaptability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to students from India who are planning to study in Germany or have just started?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Come with an open mind and do not expect Germany to be simply an extension of what you already know. Learn the language and culture, stay curious, build relationships and take responsibility for your development.
Do not focus only on the degree, but also on the capabilities, experiences and relationships you want to develop. Your international experience can become one of your greatest assets if you actively use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giving Back Through Mentoring<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve been involved in the MBS Alumni Mentoring Program several times. What motivated you to become a mentor, and what does giving back to the MBS community mean to you personally?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n
\n

I remember how important guidance and personal connections were during my own journey from India to Germany. Looking back, conversations with people who had already experienced similar transitions could have saved time and provided clarity.
That motivated me to join the MBS Alumni Mentoring Program and share practical experience with students and young professionals.
MBS was important to my professional development, so staying connected is a way of continuing that relationship. Giving back does not have to be big. A conversation, introduction, shared experience or simply listening can make a difference.
Mentoring is not about giving someone a fixed roadmap; it is about helping people ask the right questions and make informed decisions. It is also a way of strengthening the community that supported my own journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the most common questions or challenges international students bring to you, and what advice do you find yourself sharing most often?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many questions focus on turning academic qualifications into a career in Germany. Students often ask how to differentiate themselves, build professional networks, develop their German language skills, present their international experience and understand German employers.
Another recurring topic is confidence. Moving countries can make people question whether their background is an advantage or disadvantage.
My advice is to recognise your international perspective as a strength while adapting to the local professional environment. Academic qualifications may open doors, but communication, cultural understanding, networking and professional credibility are equally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Engineering to Quality Management<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What have been the key milestones in your career, and what role did MBS play along the way?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My career began with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in India, followed by an M.Sc. in Mechatronics at Hamburg University of Technology, which gave me a strong technical foundation.
I then built my career in automotive and quality management, leading to my current role at BMW AG as a Quality Management System Expert and Lead System Auditor.
Alongside my professional career, my MBA in General Management at MBS added a valuable business and strategic perspective to my technical background. MBS helped me connect technical expertise with business thinking, which continues to support my career today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is one key takeaway from your studies that has stayed with you?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One key lesson was to look beyond the technical solution and understand the broader business context.
A technically excellent solution is not necessarily a successful business solution. You need to understand people, processes, customers, financial implications, organisational dynamics and long-term strategy.
This mindset is especially useful in Quality Management, where success means creating systems that help organisations and people perform sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there any special moments or experiences from your time at MBS that have stayed with you?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What stayed with me most was the international learning environment.
I still remember our first-day teambuilding cooking class at Kochschule Eisenherz near Munich \u2013 it was fun. The international weeks at SDA Bocconi and Singapore Management University were also major highlights.
Working with people from different backgrounds taught me the value of different perspectives and prepared me well for my international career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building Connections That Last<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

How has your MBS network supported you since graduation, and how do you stay connected to the community?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

My connection with MBS continues through alumni activities, mentoring and professional interactions.
The network provides something qualifications alone cannot: access to different perspectives and experiences. Alumni represent different industries, countries and career stages, offering insights into diverse business environments and career paths.
Professional relationships should not be purely transactional. Some of the most valuable relationships grow from shared experiences and mutual interest. Being an alumnus means remaining part of a community and continuing to exchange experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give students about building meaningful professional relationships during and after their studies?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Do not wait until graduation to start building your career. Speak to alumni, attend company events, take internships seriously, build industry relationships, learn German and understand what you can contribute.
Start with genuine curiosity. Instead of asking, \u201cWhat can this person do for me?\u201d, consider what you can learn, what you can contribute and how you can stay connected.
Follow up, stay in touch even when you need nothing, and offer help when you can. Your network is defined by the quality and trust of relationships, not the number of LinkedIn connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building a Career in Germany\u2019s Automotive Industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What recommendations would you give to students who want to build a career in Quality Management or the automotive industry?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Build a strong foundation first.
In Quality Management and automotive manufacturing, it is important to understand processes, systems, data, people and organisations. Develop expertise in quality management, auditing, and Lean principles to drive high-impact process improvements and problem-solving.
As AI and digitalisation continue to change the professional landscape, the ability to learn and adapt is increasingly important. Go beyond theory and understand how processes work in real organisations. Practical experience and the ability to connect technical expertise with business needs are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n

What should international students, especially those from India, know about starting a career in Germany?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Technical knowledge is important, but it is only one part of the equation.
Understand German workplace culture, communicate clearly, be reliable, and learn to work independently as well as in teams. German language skills can significantly expand your opportunities, even when English is the working language.
International students should also recognise what they already bring: different perspectives, international experience, adaptability and cross-cultural skills. The goal is not to leave your Indian identity behind, but to combine it with a strong understanding of the German and European business environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, what is one piece of advice you would give an MBS student from India who is currently where you once were?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Be patient with yourself, but be proactive about your future.
Build strong foundations, stay curious, learn from others, develop technical and interpersonal skills, build your network early and remain open to opportunities.
Most importantly, believe that your journey from India to Germany can become a unique professional strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
