Your phone. Your car. Your AI data center. All powered by a chip 20 micrometers thin, thinner than a human hair. Here’s what we saw behind the scenes at Infineon.
Last week, our EMBA delegation from Zhejiang University, travelling with Munich Business School as part of our Academic Travel Program, stepped inside Infineon Technologies AG in Neubiberg. What we found: a company that’s invisible in daily life yet impossible to live without.
Here’s what blew our minds:
- AI is power-hungry: literally Every AI breakthrough runs on electricity first. Infineon’s semiconductors manage the power conversion for the ENTIRE journey, from the grid all the way down to the processor core. No efficient power, no AI.
- Fighting chaos with algorithms: Global supply chains are volatile by nature. Infineon fights back with AI, deep learning and predictive analytics, taming the infamous “bullwhip effect” and turning unpredictability into agility.
- One factory. Worldwide. Forget siloed plants. Infineon runs its production sites, distribution centers and partners as a single “Global Virtual Factory”, shifting output across the globe in real time. Their capacity deal with Hyundai and Kia locks in security through 2030.
- 20 micrometers that change everything: Infineon’s 300mm silicon power wafer is just 20 micrometers thin, thinner than paper, yet it cuts power losses by more than 15%. That’s engineering at the edge of physics.
- Everywhere, unnoticed EVs. Payment cards. The microphone in your earbuds. Infineon leads the world in automotive semiconductors, power semiconductors and security ICs, and is already building post-quantum cryptography to defend tomorrow’s digital world.
