About The University

Chulalongkorn University is not only Thailand’s oldest university—it is an institution of national significance. Founded in 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in honor of his father, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who had played a key role in modernizing the country, the university has had a clear mission from the very beginning: education as a means to national strength and social progress. Today, Chula ranks among the leading research universities in Southeast Asia. With approximately 40,000 students, 18 faculties, a Graduate School, 11 research institutes, and over 2,800 faculty members, it is one of the most comprehensive universities in the region. Year after year, Chulalongkorn University ranks first in Thailand—in the QS World University Rankings 2026 for the tenth consecutive time, with an overall global ranking of 221 and top-100 positions in the areas of Academic Reputation and Employment Outcomes.

What makes Chula particularly strong in international competition is its consistent combination of academic depth and practical orientation. The Chulalongkorn Business School (CBS), formerly the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, exemplifies this commitment: As one of fewer than 1% of all business schools worldwide, CBS holds the coveted Triple Crown Accreditation—simultaneous recognition by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA. This is the highest international mark of quality for business schools.

International students find a wide range of options at Chula: Over 100 English-language programs are available, supplemented by courses specifically tailored to exchange students. The learning environment is deliberately global in orientation—a network of more than 100 partner universities and a high proportion of international students foster encounters, perspectives, and networks that extend beyond the classroom. Those who study here are not only challenged academically but also grow personally—right in the vibrant heart of a global metropolis.

The Chulalongkorn University Campus

The Chulalongkorn University campus is a story unto itself. Spanning over 180 hectares—right in the heart of Bangkok—this impressive university complex blends historic architecture with modern infrastructure. Stepping onto the campus is like stepping into a piece of Thai history: expansive green spaces, well-maintained tree-lined avenues, and classic buildings from the university’s founding era stand alongside modern libraries, laboratories, and innovative learning centers.

The location is unbeatable: The campus is situated in the immediate vicinity of Siam Square, one of Bangkok’s liveliest neighborhoods, and is directly connected to the BTS Skytrain network. This makes the entire city—from downtown to markets, shopping malls, and cultural institutions—quick and easy to reach. At the same time, the campus itself offers everything that makes student life special: cafés, restaurants, libraries, sports facilities, a health center, fitness centers, and a vibrant student community.

The Chulalongkorn Business School has three modern main buildings with specialized business libraries, computer labs, auditoriums, and career services facilities. The international student residence—the Chulalongkorn University International House, a 26-story complex—offers exchange students modern rooms with all the comforts, 24-hour security, and access to the campus shuttle service. In short: Here, there’s the perfect balance between academic rigor and authentic campus life.

Living and Housing in Bangkok

Bangkok isn’t a city that can be easily described—you have to experience it for yourself. With over 10 million residents, Thailand’s capital is one of the world’s most dynamic metropolises: loud, colorful, full of contrasts, and utterly fascinating. Street food stalls right next to five-star restaurants, centuries-old temples alongside futuristic skyscrapers, green canals next to one of Asia’s most modern subway systems—Bangkok blends tradition and modernity in a way you won’t soon forget. For international students, Bangkok offers a unique student experience. The city is alive around the clock: interesting lectures and practical projects during the day, and markets, concerts, museums, or the legendary street food scene in the evenings. Culturally, there is hardly a city that offers so much all at once—from the Grand Palace and the Bangkok Art and Culture Center to the lively night markets in Chatuchak or the quieter temple complexes along the khlongs (canals).

The cost of living in Bangkok is moderate to affordable by international standards, especially for students. Those planning on a budget of 600 to 900 euros per month can live comfortably—including housing, food, transportation, and leisure activities. Inexpensive meals are available for the equivalent of 1–2 euros at street food stalls, and the public transit system (BTS, MRT) is modern and affordable. Several accommodation options are available to exchange students at Chulalongkorn University. The campus-owned International House offers comfortable, fully furnished single and double rooms; spaces are limited and should be reserved well in advance. Those who prefer private housing will find numerous furnished apartments and shared apartments in the neighborhoods surrounding the campus as well as in the adjacent Siam district—monthly rent here typically ranges from 200 to 500 euros, depending on location and amenities.

Another advantage of Bangkok: The city is the perfect starting point for travel throughout Southeast Asia. Affordable flights connect the city with Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia—allowing you to combine your semester with unforgettable travel experiences.
