The University of Melbourne, often referred to as UniMelb by students and staff, has a long tradition of higher education: it was founded in 1853, making it the second oldest university in Australia and the oldest in the state of Victoria. Since its foundation, the University of Melbourne has developed into one of the world's leading teaching and research institutions and now offers students a wide range of study options.
The University of Melbourne comprises nine faculties a broad variety of subjects and courses: from arts, architecture, construction, and planning to economics, education, engineering, fine arts, and music to law, natural sciences, medicine, dentistry, and health sciences, all disciplines are represented. UniMelb's educational approach places great emphasis on individual, flexible learning and encourages students to discover their passions with curiosity and creative methods. Within their department, students choose at least one major, often in combination with one or more minors. With the help of electives and so-called breadth subjects from other disciplines, students create their own study profile according to their interests.
In addition to its excellent teaching, the University of Melbourne is renowned for its research strength. It is a member of the Group of Eight, an association of Australia's eight largest research universities. At several research and innovation centers, top scientists and Nobel Prize winners, for example in medicine, are working on solutions to key societal challenges. In keeping with its motto “Redefine Possible”, the university is breaking new, innovative ground: it promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and works closely with national and international partners to combine research and teaching in a forward-looking way.
