About The University

The University of Melbourne, often referred to as UniMelb by students and staff, has a long tradition of higher education: it was founded in 1853, making it the second oldest university in Australia and the oldest in the state of Victoria. Since its foundation, the University of Melbourne has developed into one of the world's leading teaching and research institutions and now offers students a wide range of study options.

The University of Melbourne comprises nine faculties a broad variety of subjects and courses: from arts, architecture, construction, and planning to economics, education, engineering, fine arts, and music to law, natural sciences, medicine, dentistry, and health sciences, all disciplines are represented. UniMelb's educational approach places great emphasis on individual, flexible learning and encourages students to discover their passions with curiosity and creative methods. Within their department, students choose at least one major, often in combination with one or more minors. With the help of electives and so-called breadth subjects from other disciplines, students create their own study profile according to their interests.

In addition to its excellent teaching, the University of Melbourne is renowned for its research strength. It is a member of the Group of Eight, an association of Australia's eight largest research universities. At several research and innovation centers, top scientists and Nobel Prize winners, for example in medicine, are working on solutions to key societal challenges. In keeping with its motto “Redefine Possible”, the university is breaking new, innovative ground: it promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and works closely with national and international partners to combine research and teaching in a forward-looking way.

The location is influential in agricultural education in Australia and its future direction. Creswick is Australia's only campus dedicated exclusively to forestry science and research. The campus is home to state-of-the-art laboratories, a specialist library, and historical collections. The Werribee campus, 32 km southwest of Melbourne, is all about training the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary researchers. Finally, Shepparton is home to the university's Department of Rural Health (DRH) and the Academy of Sport Health and Education (ASHE).

Living and Housing in Melbourne

Melbourne is located in southeastern Australia, more precisely on the northern shore of Port Phillip Bay, which gives the cityscape a maritime, spacious character. With a population of around five million, the capital of the state of Victoria is the second largest city in Australia after Sydney. But don't worry: the actual center, with almost all of the sights, is concentrated in just one square kilometer. Here you'll find alleys full of street art, trendy cafes, and countless restaurants representing different cultures, Victorian architecture alongside skyscrapers, a vibrant music and arts scene, and at the same time, relaxing parks and green spaces. Culture lovers will get their money's worth in Melbourne, as will sun worshippers and water lovers, because of course you can also swim and surf in the bay on the Indian Ocean. Melbourne combines big-city energy and cultural diversity with a relaxed lifestyle – perfect for international students who want to try something new. No wonder Melbourne is one of the most livable cities in the world (2025: 4th place) and even topped this ranking for seven years until 2017!

Living in Melbourne can be relatively competitive, especially at the beginning of the semester when demand for housing is particularly high. Many international students opt for university residential colleges or apartment-style accommodation because they can get a place there more quickly and reliably. Fortunately, the University of Melbourne offers a relatively wide range of accommodation options for students. Prices vary between 440 and 880 Australian dollars (AUD) per week, depending on the type of room and level of catering. Those who prefer private accommodation will find many shared apartment options in popular neighborhoods such as Carlton, Brunswick, North Melbourne, or Fitzroy, but they will need to be patient. Rent for a room in a shared apartment is usually between AUD 200 and AUD 350 per week. Overall, it is worth starting your search early and remaining flexible in terms of location.

Sophie Former master's student at Munich Business School and exchange student at the University of Melbourne
"The enormous campus and extensive grounds of the University of Melbourne are very impressive. To ensure that no one gets lost, there are information points everywhere where you can ask for directions if you lose your bearings. I particularly liked the international atmosphere on campus. It's a great way to improve your English skills. Melbourne itself is also fantastic and is not without reason considered one of the most livable cities in the world."
