About The University

Founded in 1969 from the merger of several colleges and universities, the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is now one of the largest French-speaking universities on the entire North American continent. French-speaking and yet – or perhaps precisely because of this – with international appeal: the Université du Québec à Montréal offers people from all over the world the opportunity to study at the highest university level in French. On the one hand, this is particularly attractive for native French speakers from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. At the same time, targeted support services for non-native speakers and individual English-language or bilingual programs also attract students from other parts of the world. The result is a colorful and diverse kaleidoscope on the UQAM campus, with around 30,000 local and 4,000 foreign students from over 90 different countries.

The Université du Québec à Montréal is one of Canada's larger universities and offers a diverse range of more than 300 programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels in the fields of arts, communication, education, management, political science and law, natural sciences, health sciences, and humanities. All study programs are characterized by a strong practical focus and gain relevance through activities outside the classroom. With laboratories, production studios, workshops, and studios, UQAM's modern campus offers ideal conditions for practical exercises, experiments, exhibitions, projects, or participation in international competitions. Many of the programs are truly unique to UQAM in terms of their content and pedagogical design. Degree programs such as Contemporary Puppetry, Immersive Media, and Artificial Intelligence in Digital Marketing are not available anywhere else in Canada and in some cases, not even in North America.

In addition to its teaching, the Université du Québec à Montréal also excels in research. In recent years, the public university has established itself as one of Canada's leading research universities. Its cutting-edge research often focuses on social issues and develops innovative solutions in interdisciplinary teams.

The UQAM campuses

The Université du Québec à Montréal is a thoroughly urban university. Its two main locations the central campus and the Complexe des sciences Pierre-Dansereau are located in the heart of Montreal and blend harmoniously into the lively Quartier Latin and Quartier des spectacles neighborhoods.

The central campus is located directly at Montreal's main metro station, Berri-UQAM. It consists of more than ten different buildings, known as pavilions, and is home to a wide variety of disciplines and programs, particularly in the fields of business, social sciences, and the arts. The Complexe des sciences Pierre-Dansereau, with its eight pavilions, is dedicated to the natural sciences, engineering, and technology. The campus facilities at the Université du Québec à Montréal are state-of-the-art. For example, the Judith-Jasmin pavilion in the Latin Quarter offers workshops and studios for art and design students, as well as media studios for journalistic activities. The Complexe des sciences Pierre-Dansereau houses specialized laboratories for scientific experiments and research. In addition to its academic facilities, the UQAM campus offers a wide range of services: affordable cafeterias, sports and cultural activities, well-equipped libraries, and student residences.

Regional campuses on the outskirts of the city

In order to provide access to first-class education to students who cannot or do not wish to live directly in Montreal, the Université du Québec à Montréal operates several branch campuses in the Montreal metropolitan area. At its campuses in Lanaudière, Laval, Longueuil, and Montérégie-Ouest, UQAM offers selected study programs, often in a more flexible model, for example in the form of evening or weekend courses.

Living and Housing in Montreal

Montreal, Canada's second-largest city, never stands still. Approximately ten percent of the city's 1.76 million inhabitants are students from 150 countries, and many of the countless attractions and infrastructure in the city are explicitly aimed at a young target group. In keeping with Canada's inclusive mentality, every culture finds its place and visibility in city life. This is particularly evident in the restaurant scene, where you can literally taste the world. The official language is French, but English is also widely spoken – a mix that makes it easy to settle in and gives Montreal an open atmosphere with a distinctive flair. During the warm summer months, life takes place outdoors: pop-up terraces, street concerts, open-air festivals – such as the famous Montreal International Jazz Festival – and street art events spring up everywhere. In winter, on the other hand, it gets cold, but Montreal remains active. People meet up to go ice skating, visit Igloofest, an open-air techno festival in the snow, or go skiing on Mont Royal, Montreal's local mountain in the middle of the city.

Student accommodation in Montreal is available both on and off campus. The Université du Québec à Montréal operates two student residences: the Résidences René-Lévesque and the Saint-Urbain. Places are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Other popular residential areas for students are the Plateau-Mont-Royal, Mille End, and Côte-des-Neiges neighborhoods. Many students prefer shared accommodation such as flat shares to private studios. Compared to many other large North American cities, Montreal is considered relatively inexpensive in terms of housing and living costs: a room in a flat share costs between CAD 450-650 per month, studios between CAD 700-1000 depending on location. However, this does not mean that finding a good apartment is easy. Competition increases, especially at the start of the semester in late summer.
