Founded in 1969 from the merger of several colleges and universities, the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is now one of the largest French-speaking universities on the entire North American continent. French-speaking and yet – or perhaps precisely because of this – with international appeal: the Université du Québec à Montréal offers people from all over the world the opportunity to study at the highest university level in French. On the one hand, this is particularly attractive for native French speakers from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. At the same time, targeted support services for non-native speakers and individual English-language or bilingual programs also attract students from other parts of the world. The result is a colorful and diverse kaleidoscope on the UQAM campus, with around 30,000 local and 4,000 foreign students from over 90 different countries.
The Université du Québec à Montréal is one of Canada's larger universities and offers a diverse range of more than 300 programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels in the fields of arts, communication, education, management, political science and law, natural sciences, health sciences, and humanities. All study programs are characterized by a strong practical focus and gain relevance through activities outside the classroom. With laboratories, production studios, workshops, and studios, UQAM's modern campus offers ideal conditions for practical exercises, experiments, exhibitions, projects, or participation in international competitions. Many of the programs are truly unique to UQAM in terms of their content and pedagogical design. Degree programs such as Contemporary Puppetry, Immersive Media, and Artificial Intelligence in Digital Marketing are not available anywhere else in Canada – and in some cases, not even in North America.
In addition to its teaching, the Université du Québec à Montréal also excels in research. In recent years, the public university has established itself as one of Canada's leading research universities. Its cutting-edge research often focuses on social issues and develops innovative solutions in interdisciplinary teams.
