The NLA University College is a private, publicly recognized university with campuses in the three Norwegian cities of Bergen, Kristiansand, and Oslo. Founded in 1968 as a training academy for teachers, the NLA University College has since developed into a university offering a wide range of bachelor's and master's programs in the fields of education, theology, philosophy, journalism, media and communication, sports, music, intercultural studies, and finance and management.
A distinctive feature of the NLA University Collge is its Christian values, which influence its educational concept and community life. At NLA, education is understood as a holistic process: in addition to “what you become,” “who you become” is also at the heart of teaching. The program not only shapes your professional skills, but also your personal, ethical, and social attitudes. Christian values such as respect for creation and human dignity, intellectual freedom, charity, forgiveness, equality, and solidarity play a central role in this. The college staff strive to create a pleasant environment in which each individual can develop freely and is motivated to actively engage in the well-being of their fellow human beings and society at the national and global level. Those who wish to become involved in Christian communities will find opportunities to do so on all three campuses.
Similarly, NLA University College is characterized by its international orientation. In accordance with its Christian values, NLA University College welcomes all prospective students, regardless of their religion, nationality, or outlook on life, and even offers study and semester programs specifically aimed at international students, such as the English-language master's in Global Journalism or the semester program in Business, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship. Accordingly, students from over 50 countries study at NLA University College. In addition, students in all degree programs have the opportunity to study abroad and participate in international exchange programs.
NLA University College has six different campuses. Which campus you will study at during your studies abroad in Norway depends on your choice of subject.
Most students at NLA University College study in Bergen.
There are two campuses in Bergen: The Sandviken Campus is located ten minutes by bus from the city center at the foot of Sandviksfjellet (Sandviken Mountain). At the Sandviken Campus, NLA offers courses in intercultural studies, education and theology, religion, and philosophy.
The second campus in Bergen, the Kalfaret Campus, was newly established in 2024 and is located near the city center. On a beautiful, spacious campus, students will find classrooms and study rooms, a cafeteria, a library, laboratories, administrative offices, and a cozy outdoor area. The Kalfaret campus is home to degree programs in teacher training, early childhood development, business administration, and sports.
In southern Norway, NLA Høgskolen maintains the Gimlekollen Campus, about 20 minutes from downtown Kristiansand. Approximately 350 students study here, mainly in the fields of journalism, media, and communication. Due to this specialization, NLA Gimlekollen is not only equipped with the usual seminar rooms, but also has a radio and television studio, an editing suite, and several digital workstations. Several semester programs in business administration, leadership, and entrepreneurship are also taught in Kristiansand.
The NLA campus Staffeldtsgate is located in Norway's capital. Conveniently situated in the heart of downtown Oslo, it offers music, teaching, business administration, and theology students a lively learning environment where they can develop both academically and personally.
Since fall 2025, NLA University College has also had a campus in Stavanger. Located near the city center, the Hauge School of Management offers programs in innovation, marketing, and management, as well as economics and administration.
NLA University College is also represented in Trondheim, one of Norway's best student cities. In collaboration with Gå Ut Senteret and Norkirken Trondheim, it maintains a study center that offers courses in theology.
Whether you choose Bergen, Kristiansand, or Oslo, all three cities offer a vibrant student life with a wide range of leisure activities, places to go out, and student associations. One place that students in Kristiansand should not miss is the new BARE Student House, which regularly hosts social and cultural events for students. A special feature of Norwegian cities is their close connection to nature. While you can enjoy urban life with all its amenities in the city center, you will find the tranquility of nature just outside the city gates. Whether in the midst of Bergen's seven mountains and fjords, the forests and beaches of Kristiansand, or the ski slopes and lakes around Oslo, city life and nature merge everywhere to create an ideal place for recreation and sports.
Student housing is well organized in all three cities, but demand is sometimes very high. That's why it's important to start looking for an apartment early on and - in the case of student residences - to meet the application deadlines when studying in Norway. The NLA University College advertises guaranteed accommodation for international students. However, these are not university-owned dormitories, but residential complexes run by the student services organizations SiO (Oslo), Sammen (Bergen), and SiA (Kristiansand). Applying for a place in a dormitory is voluntary and your own responsibility, i.e., you will not automatically be assigned an apartment when you enroll at NLA Høgskolen! If you apply within the specified deadlines, you will receive well-equipped accommodation at a comparatively low price of between NOK 3,000 and NOK 7,000 per month (€250–€600). If you prefer to live privately in a shared apartment or even in your own apartment, you must be prepared for significantly higher rents – often around NOK 10,000. Generally speaking, the situation is less tense in smaller cities such as Kristiansand, and rents are lower than in Oslo and Bergen.
