About The University

The origins of the University of Westminster date back to 1838, when British engineer and aeronautics pioneer Sir George Cayley founded the Royal Polytechnic Institution on London's Regent Street – the first technical college in London and one of the first in the United Kingdom. In 1992, the college was granted university status and adopted its current name, the University of Westminster. The university's pioneering spirit is documented by other historical milestones: It hosted the first publicmoving picture show in the UK by the Lumière brothers (1896), organized the first marathon race at the Olympic Games in London over the now traditional distance (1908), and offered the first degree courses in Photographic Science, Photography, and Media Studies in the 1960s and 1970s.

Today, the University of Westminster is one of the UK's leading universities, with four campuses in London and a wide range of courses. The bachelor's, master's, and professional programs are spread across three colleges: the College of Design, Creative and Digital Industries, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Westminster Business School, each of which is divided into four schools. Westminster Business School is accredited by both AACSB and AMBA – a seal of quality awarded to only a few business faculties worldwide. Despite their diversity, the University of Westminster's study programs have one thing in common: they are strongly practice-oriented, continuing the legacy of the Polytechnic Institution, which sought to educate the working population. At the University and Educator Awards 2023, the University of Westminster was awarded first place for work-based learning.

The student body at the University of Westminster is equally diverse. This diversity is not only reflected in the wide range of subjects on offer, but also in terms of nationality, social background, religion and worldview, as well as physical and mental abilities. Inclusion is structurally embedded in the university system. The University of Westminster is continuously working to make all rooms barrier-free and offers prayer rooms, among other things. Speaking of students, the University of Westminster's alumni include numerous world-renowned personalities, including Sir Alexander Fleming, inventor of penicillin, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, and Charlie Watts, musician and member of the Rolling Stones.
