About The University

The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego, UCSD) is a relatively young university. It was founded in 1960 as part of the UC system with the aim of creating a research-intensive elite university for natural sciences, engineering, and marine sciences on the California west coast – comparable to MIT or Caltech. The University of California is the second California state university system, alongside the California State University system, with a total of ten universities or campuses. Although the individual universities are independent of each other, they share a good reputation for the quality of their teaching and research.

In just under 70 years, UC San Diego has grown from a few hundred to over 45,000 students and has become a world-leading research university. Like many of the UC universities, UC San Diego is one of the Public Ivy universities, whose goal is to offer students the same quality of education as the private elite colleges of the Ivy League. According to U.S. News & World Report 2026, UC San Diego ranks 26th among all U.S. universities and is considered the sixth-best public university in the country. UC San Diego's research excellence is evident in its various institutes, which receive over $1.7 billion in funding annually, drive groundbreaking innovations, attract Nobel Prize winners, and create numerous new jobs.

UC San Diego is decentrally organized and divided into various undergraduate colleges, to which bachelor's students are assigned at the beginning of their studies and which then form their organizational, social, and, to some extent, academic home on campus. The college structure enables individual support and promotes a sense of belonging without students having to forego the advantages of a large institution. Academically, the University of California, San Diego is divided into five departments and graduate schools. Well known far beyond the university's borders are the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, one of the oldest and most renowned marine research institutes in the world, the UC San Diego School of Medicine, and the Rady School of Management, which holds the internationally recognized AACSB accreditation. The student body at UC San Diego is as diverse as its range of courses: everyone can find a suitable subject and community here!

Testimonial

Philipp Hoffmann Former master's student at Munich Business School and exchange student at UC San Diego
"For my semester abroad as part of my master's degree at Munich Business School, I was looking for a renowned university with interesting courses. The location should be English-speaking, by the sea, and offer summer temperatures. At first, I thought of UCLA in Los Angeles, but I found the city too big, loud, and confusing. San Diego, 120 miles away, which also has a University of California, seemed like a good alternative. What can I say? I was not disappointed; in fact, my expectations were exceeded! The courses at UC San Diego were very practice-oriented, involved a lot of dialogue, and often included group work. The workload during the semester was high, but there was no major exam period at the end of the semester. San Diego was incredible every day and, especially for me as a sports lover, offered many opportunities to try new things and pursue my passions. The city definitely deserves its title as America's finest city!"
