About The University

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) developed from a manual training school in the 1890s into a college for teacher training (1921) and is now one of the leading universities in the USA. With broader curricula, the college was admitted to the University of California (UC) system in 1944 and designated a full-fledged UC campus 14 years later. The University of California system is one of two California state university systems with a total of ten universities or campuses. Although the individual universities are independent of each other, they share a good reputation for the quality of their teaching and research.

UC Santa Barbara is divided into five colleges and graduate schools offering a wide range of courses. From humanities and social sciences to natural sciences, engineering, and environmental sciences to creative studies, educational sciences, and computer science, prospective students can choose from over 200 degree programs. The student body, with around 26,000 students, is equally diverse: slightly more than a third of the students belong to ethnic minorities and have grown up multilingual (usually English and another language). In addition, a considerable proportion of bachelor's degree students are transfer students, i.e., students who initially studied at another university or community college and then transferred to UC Santa Barbara during their studies. Around 14% of students are international students from over 80 countries.

The University of California, Santa Barbara is known beyond the boundaries of the university and the state for its excellent interdisciplinary research, particularly in the fields of engineering, physics, materials science, environmental science, and marine biology. It is one of only 71 research-intensive institutions in the US and Canada that have been admitted to the prestigious Association of American Universities. Eight faculty members at UC Santa Barbara have received the Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking research.
